Poppies of Dunkeld 02
Photographed on the Saturday 30 May 2015.
This is a view of some of the lovely poppies gracing the streets of bright whitewashed houses in the picturesque village of Dunkeld in Perthshire, Scotland. The name Dunkeld comes from the Gaelic for Dùn Chailleann ‘Fort of the Caledonians’ and this indicates an early importance dating back to the Iron Age. The town is one of the best preserved historic towns in Scotland and once its Ecclesiastical centre. Situated on the river Tay, the longest river in Scotland which also carries the greatest volume of water in the British Isles. It is spanned by Thomas Telford’s Bridge which also introduced two new streets to the town as a result of its construction.
Dunkeld is situated in an area of Scotland called Perthshire Big Tree Country. Famous for its "big trees", the countryside is well known for the woods named by Shakespeare in his play Macbeth. Close by is the Hermitage a National Trust site home to Ossian's Hall of Mirrors and Ossian's Cave, Georgian follies built by the Dukes of Atholl and some superb walks. Also nearby is the ‘Loch of the Lowes’ nature reserve which can be found on foot (and car) from Dunkeld as part of many walking routes in the area.
Most of the original town was destroyed during the Battle of Dunkeld when, in August 1689, the 26th Foot (Cameronian Regiment) successfully fought the Jacobite’s shortly after their victory at the Battle of Killiecrankie. Holes made by musket-ball strikes during the battle can still be seen in the walls of the Cathedral. The rebuilt town is one of the most complete 18th-century country towns in Scotland. Many of the harled (rough-cast) vernacular buildings have been restored by the National Trust for Scotland.
