Uttaklev: Midnight Sun_Lofotens
Photographed on the Saturday 28 June 2008.
Uttaklev is 10-15 minutes from Leknes on the Lofoten islands but can also be reached from another stunning beach on foot, Haukland beach. We went here while on holiday to see the ‘Midnight Sun’. The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs north of the Arctic Circle in summer and also the Antarctic, though not so accessible. The opposite phenomenon occurs in winter i.e. ‘Polar Night’ where the sun stays below the horizon for some considerable time depending on how close the pole you are. Uttaklev and Haukland are two of the best spots to see not just the Midnight Sun but also the Northern Lights, on the Lofotens. They are wonderful stretches of beach with ample rock and boulders with stunning mountains as a backdrop. In short a photographer’s paradise and one place I would love to go back too armed with my new gear, should I be able to afford it in the future.
