Flora
Lilac Wallflower & Dew
Photographed on the Monday 15 July 2013.
Wallflower
This is a wall flower from our back garden taken early in the morning with dew present on the plant naturally. This is a good time to photograph much of nature (light low in sky and not harsh) especially plants and insects which will be relatively quiet and still (less wind early morning) and probably will be covered in dew.
Like all flowering plants, wallflowers belong to the Angiospermae or Anthophyta and in some classifications Magnoliophyta. Wall flowers belong to the Order Brassicales, Family Brassicaceae and Genus Erysimum. Most garden wallflowers are derived from E. cheiri (which is often placed in Cheiranthus) as cultivars such as ‘Bowle’s Mauve’ Erysimum linifolium glaucum or Erysimum linifolium 'Bowles' Mauve'), the image depicted above is Erysimum POEM™ Lilac. Erysimums generally refer to perennials and Cheiranthus, biennials, although Cheiranthus was incorporated into Erysimums so strictly speaking they are all Erysimums. The term ‘Wallflower’ was used mainly to refer to bedding wallflowers, with many familiar varieties dating back a century or more.
